Armenia At A Crossroads

The Pashinyan Clique Must Be Chased Out Of Power

Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov is correct in his assessment regarding the US and it’s “friends” having a poor survivability ratio. Just look at what has happened to the Kurds of norther Syria. They have attached themselves completely to US imperialism, giving up any hope of negotiating a better deal for themselves with the Syrian government in the process. The US will eventually leave and the Kurdish population will find itself stuck between the reactionary Turkish state and a Syrian government which is backed up by Russia and Iran who see no need to make concessions to them. US imperialism sees Armenia in crudely instrumentalist terms, they merely wish to use it to try to unbalance Russia and Iran. The Armenian comprador ruling class are so utterly degenerated, and overly influenced by Armenian bourgeois based in France and the US, that they have bought into the idea that the US wishes to “invest” in Armenia. The compradors see that this is a quick path to profitability for themselves, just the same way that the Ukrainian compradors did, and are willing to see sacrifice land and thousands of working class lives in order to pursue this mirage. If US imperialism attains it’s objectives though then it will be a disaster for Armenian workers who will see their tenuous independence lost for good as the US will not act to defend them but only push the compradors to take ever more anti-Russian and anti-Iranian actions. So Aliyev and his patron Erdogan will wait and will sell the idea of expanding Azeri territory to the Iranians and Russians as being better for them to have a non-NATO greater Azerbaijan as a neighbour than an Armenia that has become a US puppet state. Of course Tehran and Moscow don’t trust Erdogan and are fully aware of the fact that British imperialism has very significant investments with the Baku regime as well so won’t be keen on this. That is why Aliyev and Erdogan need Pashinyan and his clique to not only remain in power but to aggressively expand their ties to the US bloc and alienate their former allies.

If Pashinyan is thrown out of power and Armenia realigns itself more firmly into the Russian sphere. From an economic point of view, even for the Armenian national bourgeois, this makes total sense as Russian and China are by far the biggest Armenian import and export partners with Iran and India becoming very important as well. The economic ties with the US and Europe are nowhere near as vital for economic growth in Armenia as the four Eurasian powers are. What we have in Armenia is a case of the global power of US imperialism temporarily creating problems because it’s unprecedented dominance since 1991 has given it total domination of the educational and cultural sphere for the (so called) educated petit bourgeois. These illusions will all crash down though as there’s no way the Europeans or the US will ever be able to match the economic importance of Russia, China, Iran or India to Armenia. The US bloc plays a very strong game though when it comes to organising a weaponising the influence of the diaspora and recruiting networks of disillusioned petit bourgeois to act as their foot soldiers in countries like Armenia. This is where the importance of multipolarity comes in though. Armenia can do without it’s ties to the US or Europa. This offers nothing to the country other than destruction, building greater ties with the BRICS countries on the other hand offers a great deal.

As Stalin observed in his work ‘Anarchism or Socialism’ consciousness lags behind material reality. At this stage the consciousness of too many in nations like Armenia is rooted in the US blocs unprecedented dominance of their educational and cultural sphere over the last 30 years. Now the Armenians will have to wage a liberation struggle to free their nation from the influence of the imperialists and that will mean there is an urgent need to counterbalance the forces recruited by the US bloc which have propelled the Pashinyan clique to power. The only force that can adequately do this is the Armenian working class, only the mobilisation of the proletariat can give reclaim their country from the control of the compradors. It is to be hoped that a national patriotic block can be formed in Armenia that can both remove Pashinyan and then engage in further economic development of the country to deny the compradors the political space to spin their lies about the “wonders” of the west. If this can be done then the ambitions of Ankara and Baku will remain thwarted as Armenia will be able to build itself solid alliances with its regional partners (Russia and Iran) as well as both the Indians and the Chinese.
